Product operations

The Smartbleach ® Teeth Whitening System with a patented red bleaching gel in combination with the unique characteristics of a KTP laser offers a safe way to produce sparkling white teeth.

The characteristics of the laser light with the gel have a whitening effect on teeth. Together they provide optimal long-lasting white teeth.
After the teeth are cleaned, the red gel is applied to the teeth and the green laser light activates the gel causing it to penetrate deep into the teeth which has a bleaching effect (penetrating into the dentin layer, not the enamel) on the patient’s teeth.

The Smartbleach system has three components:

  • The green light of the KTP laser (532 nm) has been shown to have a bleaching effect on the teeth (photo-oxidation of the chelating structures).
  • When the green light is combined with the red gel (complementary colors) the laser light creates an energy that is ‘captured’ within the gel. This causes the gel temperature to rise (not the teeth!), thereby increasing the reactivity of the peroxide.
  • Lastly, there is a light induced photochemical process, which causes a molecular change in the gel those results in the production of e.g. hydroxyl radicals. These radicals are the most efficient effecting the redox reaction to bleach the tooth.

Moreover, Smartbleach® makes use of a basis gel. This gel increases the percentage of hydroxyl radicals to 50% more efficacy in bleaching than the parallel forming oxygen radicals. The etching of the enamel is avoided by choosing a non acid solution.

Smartbleach® has been developed to keep the enamel intact.
The laser activated fluoride application given at the end of the treatment gives the added benefit of hardening the enamel layer of the teeth.

Q&A

Why is Smartbleach® better than any other treatment?

It works! Smartbleach® is more effective. Its results are more consistent than any other bleaching system used on natural teeth. In the past years, the Smartbleach® system has been extensively researched and developed. University studies in Europe show that the treatment is safe and effective. Smartbleach® is also the only system that can effectively treat tetracycline discoloration.

Is laser light dangerous?

There is absolutely no danger if used by trained professionals.

Is Smartbleach® a safe method to bleach teeth?

Extensive scientific research has clearly shown that the Smartbleach method does not affect the enamel (thanks to the character basis of the gel) and there is negligible heat build-up of the teeth (pulp tissue).

Can you show the expected improvement to the patient?

Yes, the improvement can be shown by using a color scale.

How many treatments do I need to perform?

For the majority of people, only one treatment is necessary. Depending on the type and degree of discoloration, it is possible that two or three treatments may be necessary.

How long does a treatment take?

Normally it takes one hour.

Do I need to anesthetize the patient?

No.

Does the treatment hurt?

After the treatment, there may be a sensitivity reaction that occurs in the short-term, but only in a very few cases. Naturally, this has no negative effect on the teeth and is of a temporary nature.

Does Smartbleach® make the teeth stronger (healthier, cleaner)?

A side effect of using the laser in combination with fluoride is a hardening of the enamel. The laser facilitates an ‘incorporation’ of fluoride into the tooth matrix.

How long does the result last?

Assuming the patient takes good care of his teeth, experience in Europe has shown that the Smartbleach® system retains its results for years.

How much does a treatment cost?

The price is individually set, depending on the type of discoloration.

Is Smartbleach® and a KTP laser cost-effective in a dental practice?

Safe bleaching certainly has a place in the dental practice, especially in light of the public’s increasing demand for cosmetic teeth beautification. Also, it has become a greater priority to individuals to have a well looked after set of teeth.
Moreover, the KTP laser can be used for numerous other indications, which can give you an even faster return on the investment.
